Bananas are one of the most nutritious foods in the world and are grown in many places in the Philippines for local and export use. SOD found that each week, hundreds of pounds of bananas are discarded by the export shipping companies.
Since 2014, SOD has been collecting bananas each Monday from one exporting company, Banana Brothers, and distributing them to up to 30 different feeding programs each week. These are given free of charge to the programs and are eaten fresh or used more as a vegetable by boiling or frying the bananas.
The distribution program is funded by the Greater Good Foundation, which provides the resources for a driver to pick up the bananas and fuel for the vehicle. This is in the form of a grant from the Foundation.
Over the past two years, over 55 tons of bananas have been distributed to sites such as the Davao School for the Blind, Deaf Ministries International, House of Hope Cancer Center and the Haven of Hope Orphanage.
We are grateful for the donors of bananas and the support as well for the collection and distribution costs each week.
